Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Media
If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

Newsletter and email subscription
If you subscribe, we collect your email address and the guide page and plant topic you were reading. To prove your consent we record the date and time, your IP address, your browser’s user agent string and the exact wording that was shown to you, at each step: your request, your confirmation click and any withdrawal. We rely on your consent for these emails, and you can withdraw it at any time.
Your subscription only starts after you click the link in the confirmation email we send you. Every email contains a one-click unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes effect immediately. We do not ask for your name, and our emails do not contain tracking pixels. Links in our emails carry campaign tags so that our website analytics can show which articles are read; that analytics only runs according to your cookie choices.
We keep your subscriber record while you stay subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we remove the topic and page details you gave and keep only your address, marked as unsubscribed, so that we never email you again, until you ask us to erase it. Requests that were never confirmed are anonymized after 14 days: the address is removed and only the fact that a request was made is kept. When you ask us to erase your data, your consent records are erased with your subscriber record. An address that permanently bounced, or that reported one of our emails as spam, is kept on a suppression list for the sole purpose of never emailing it again.
Emails are delivered by Amazon Web Services (Amazon SES) in the United States, and some service messages are sent through Google Workspace. Your data is therefore transferred outside the European Economic Area, under the safeguards permitted by the GDPR. We store your subscriber data in our own website database, and we never sell, rent or share your email address for anyone else’s marketing.
Browser push notifications
If you choose to turn on notifications, your browser creates a subscription for this website: a unique address at your browser maker’s push service plus encryption keys. We store that subscription, the topic page you were reading when you agreed and the date. To prove your consent we also record the date and time, your IP address, your browser’s user agent string and the wording that was shown to you.
Notifications are delivered through the push service of your browser: Google (Chrome, Edge and Android browsers), Mozilla (Firefox), Apple (Safari and web apps on iPhone and iPad) or Microsoft. These services receive the encrypted message and your subscription address, and they cannot read the message. We send about one notification a week, only to tell you about new guides.
You can turn notifications off at any time in your browser’s site settings. We also stop sending when your browser tells us the subscription no longer exists, and when a subscription becomes inactive we delete its address and keys and keep only an anonymous record that it existed. You can ask us to erase your push subscription at any time using the contact details at the end of this policy.
To remember whether you have already seen or answered our notification prompt, your browser keeps a few small items in its local storage for this site (named pcb_pp_shows, pcb_pp_dis, pcb_pp_done and pcb_pp_sync). They contain no personal data and are not shared. To measure whether notifications arrive and are opened, your browser reports to us when a notification is shown, opened or closed; we store this against your subscription record, not against your name.
Who we share your data with
If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.
We share subscriber and push notification data only with the service providers named in the newsletter and push notification sections above, who process it on our behalf. If we sell or transfer this website or the business that runs it, this data may be transferred to the new owner, who must continue to honor this policy and your choices.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
Newsletter and push notification records are kept as described in their own sections above. Proof of your consent is kept for three years after your subscription ends, after which its IP address and browser details are removed. Anonymous delivery statistics are kept.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
If you subscribed to our emails or notifications, you can also ask us to access, correct or erase your subscription and consent records, or withdraw your consent, at any time. You may also ask us to restrict or object to the processing of this data, or to receive it in a portable format. Providing your email address or turning on notifications is voluntary, and we do not use automated decision-making or profiling on this data. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

Subscriber and push subscription data is stored in our own website database. Email delivery runs through Amazon Web Services and Google in the United States, and push messages pass through the push services of Google, Mozilla, Apple and Microsoft, which operate in several countries.
